Cody and Rochelle made a great brother sister combination! Rochelle started the day off right by hooking this big old Fall King back-bouncing a shrimp cocktail. She fought it for about 15 minutes before it finally hit the bottom of my net. Just a few holes later, while Rochelle's soar arm was just starting to feel better; Cody's plug got bit and it was a beautiful hatchery summer steelhead. They were very happy to go home with a bunch of amazing meat from two different species of fish! Another awesome day on the middle Rogue River!
As of October 1st anglers can no longer target King Salmon on the Rogue River unless their fishing below Grants Pass, Oregon. This is because most Chinook above there are spawning and the law doesn't want anglers catching them and using up all their valuable energy they need to spawn.
You can still however catch big Kings this year with Phil Tripp's Guide Service on the Chetco River near Brookings Oregon. The rain really influences that fishery, but November is an excellent time to target them! Anglers can continue to catch Fall Kings on the Chetco all the way through December as well. This is my favorite time of year to fish the Chetco because the crowds aren't as big, and by then there are good numbers of winter steelhead around for the taking! My first two winter steelhead came on 12/12/12 last year fishing a Mag Lip 3.5!
